Challenges and Rewards of Parenting

Being a parent has been both the most wonderful and rewarding role in my life, and at the same time the most challenging. I have learned so much from my children and from teamwork with my husband over the years!

Raising a child can be challenging, and sometimes you just need a little support. Therapy for parents is a safe place for you to explore your options and look at situations from different angles to find effective strategies and strengthen family bonds.

Whether you want to improve your parenting skills, manage family challenges, be a more cohesive parenting team, or become the best parent you can be, specialized therapy for parents can help you reach your goals.

I work with parents who want to have a solid partnership in parenting and a better relationship with their kids no matter their age or family structure. I support parents in all these different situations and more:

Understanding Counseling for Parents

Parenting Counseling is different than couples counseling. Instead of focusing on your relationship, we focus on raising your children. We can address any parenting issue for any stage of your child's development.

Parent counseling is about what's best for your kids. We work on meeting each individual child's needs with a focus on healthy child development. Your parenting experiences can help us figure out how to help you support your children so they can become the pest version of themselves.

As a parent, you want to  nurture change and development. You want your child to have things you didn't have and avoid things you had to endure and overcome.

Parenting can be like a roller coaster ride with ups and down at every age. We can look at your parenting highlights and challenges to find solutions that fit with who you are as a parent and the current needs of your child.

Your role as a parent is always changing. Counseling for parents can help you create a partnership in parenting and transition through each stage of parenting in a way that benefits you and your children.

Customized parenting sessions that focus on your family needs can help you get at the root of your parenting issues. Unique parenting solutions can help you live with less stress and worry.

Counseling Services for Parenting: How specialized therapy for parents helps

Many parents come to me with a long list of problems. When I work with parents, we focus on what you want for your family. We will work on enhancing the relationship between you and your children.

It's my job as a therapist to support you in a way that fits who you and your children are. I will never encourage you to do something that goes against your values and beliefs.

I will help you look at and understand your position as a parent from as many angles as possible, including healthy child development. You can hone in on what feels right. Then you can try things out and experiment to find what works best for your family so that each individual child's needs are met.

As you become more comfortable with new ideas and information, you can learn to navigate complex family dynamics in concert with your partner naturally.

Parents may be skeptical about therapy and feel like they have already tried everything. They are exhausted and out of ideas. Many have already seen multiple therapists trying to get answers to deal with parenting problems. It can be hard to hold onto hope.

Parent counseling can help you see things differently. Together, we can look at your individual child's needs and parenting issues to come up with positive parenting solutions that fit your family. We can make changes until the solution fits your needs. As a parenting counseling therapist, it is my goal to support you as you find unique parenting solutions that fit your family with customized parenting sessions.

Why is working with me different?

I look at things differently, so I work with my clients differently. I do not follow a preset formula for therapy. Everything is based on what you share.

You and your family are unique. You need unique parenting solutions that fit the needs you have, not techniques, tools and skills. Most likely, you know all those by now. Together, we will get creative, look at situations differently, and keep everyone's needs in mind to find the right answers or changes for you.

Specialized parenting therapy is tailored to the unique needs of your family. There is no space for one-size-fits-all techniques. Therapy for parents is about creating a partnership in parenting and a more supportive and harmonious environment for your whole family. Customized parenting sessions can help you resolve issues and improve your parent-child communication.

A big part of parenting is to find unique parenting solutions that feel comfortable and meet the needs of each child. Your solutions also need to fit into your daily life and feel doable.

I will support you through the process as you look at all the different possibilities.

The best online parenting counseling therapist keeps your individual child's needs central for supportive co-parenting. When you are comfortable in session, it will be easier to work together to come up with unique parenting solutions that fit your family's needs.

Many of the parents I work with meet in their cars during their lunch break, or after work to miss the traffic on the way home. They like the efficient use of their time.

Therapy for stressed-out parents

Being a parent can be incredibly stressful. Making time for your mental health is essential. Kids pick up on stress and react to it. When you and your kids are stressed, caring for them is more difficult and raises your stress levels too. When you take care of yourself, parenting flows more smoothly. Everyone in the house is more comfortable.

In counseling sessions we can address stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns that can impact your interactions with your kids. We can talk about neurodiversities and other differences that make parenthood challenging. We can talk about healthy child development and how to keep your parenting expectations aligned with your child's developmental stage. We will address what's important to you and anything that gets in the way of you being the parent you want to be can be discussed.

Parent counseling can equip both of you with coping mechanisms, self-regulation strategies, and a different mindset. The goal is to help you maintain a feeling of calm and tap into a sense of well-being. Focusing on your own mental health and supporting each other helps set the stage for you to function as a team.

With customized parenting sessions, you'll be better equipped to meet the challenges of parenthood and create a safe, positive, and nurturing environment for your children. When you and your partner are in sync, it's easier to be present and available. You can tag team when necessary without everything falling apart.

Virtual counseling for parents is convenient and doesn't ass the stress of traffic and schedule juggling into the picture. We can meet from anywhere you have internet connection. You don't even need to plan to be in the same place at the same time.

Parent Counseling to Create a Partnership in Parenting

It can be difficult to work as a team when you both have different backgrounds and different child-rearing beliefs. The latest research shows that the parental style best for kids is an authoritative approach. When you are both using the same approach, your language and mindset will become more and more in line with authoritative time and practice.

Why use the authoritative

parenting approach?

There are four basic approaches to parenting. Each one has a different impact on your child's development. Healthy child development is the foundation to well-being and success as an adult.

Below are the basics of each parenting approach.

The Basics of the Four Parenting Approaches

How you parent impacts healthy child development.

Authoritarian Parenting

is very directive and frequently uses punishment. Communication is rarely an option for the child. Instead of learning how to communicate and advocate for themselves, they are programmed to follow orders. This kind of child-rearing comes from a mindset that children are to be obedient, and what the parent says goes, no matter what. The parent is NEVER wrong.

Authoritarian parents have very high expectations that can be out of line with child development stages. They tend to be strict, with little flexibility. They think it is important to maintain control without explanations. When a child asks a question, the first thought of an authoritarian parent is no.

Empathy is rare. The child is expected to tough it out. There is little space for discussion, and negotiation is off the table. The parent's role is seen as molding the child into a perfect human who does what they are told without backtalk. The parent is in charge, and the child's thoughts, feelings, and opinions have no impact on rules and decisions.

Permissive Parenting

is pretty much the opposite of the authoritarian stance. There is limited guidance with few boundaries or expectations. Direction to help the child develop into a healthy adult is often missing. There are few rules to let the child know what is expected in the world. The child is on their own to figure out social constructs and ethics.

Permissive parents tend to be warm, loving, and nurturing. They are available for their child to talk to, but leave decisions wide open and let the child decide.

This parenting style focuses on keeping the peace. If a child wants something, they usually get it. If they throw a fit, the parent will comply to stop the chaos and keep the child happy. Kids raised in a strict environment can become permissive parents because they vowed not to be like their parents.

Permissive parents don't want their children to experience the strict environment they grew up in. They often have a fear of conflict. Permissive parents avoid denying their child privileges and possessions because they are afraid their children will dislike them. They may strive to create a relaxed atmosphere to counteract the atmosphere of their childhood home.

Neglectful or Uninvolved Parenting

is about providing basic needs for life, but little more. The kids have a roof over their heads, food in their tummies, and clothes on their backs. Neglectful parents aren't focused on social development, understanding emotions, or other developmental skills. This often occurs because the parents are struggling in some way.

Situations such as single parenting, night shifts, multiple jobs, a family member with mental health issues or medical conditions can consume the parent's focus and energy. Other situations can also lead to raising a child this way.

These parents don't spend much time helping with homework or providing emotional support. They don't have the time or energy to provide anything but the essentials, leaving the child to figure things out on their own.

Authoritative Parenting and Healthy Child Development

is balanced. It fills holes other parenting styles leave in child development and well-being. These parents are clear about boundaries, safety, and other expectations. They treat each child with respect. They honor individuality. When discipline is needed, it is clear and explanatory. Positive discipline leaves space for learning and understanding that everyone makes mistakes.

With warmth, flexibility, and acceptance, parents guide their children rather than direct them. The mindset is to raise a child who communicates well, understands social constructs, has high self-esteem, knows the importance of self-care, and can think critically. These parents don't claim to be perfect. They let their kids know about their mistakes to model that it's okay to not be perfect.

Authoritative parenting isn't a free-for-all. It's based in reality. Parents listen to their children's ideas and concerns, but are the adults who make the final decisions. They are also willing to explain decisions, modeling the decision-making process.

These parents tend to have deep, close relationships with their children. They stay connected while giving each child autonomy in line with their development. Clear expectations are consistently upheld while attending to the children's feelings and autonomy. They keep their expectations within the reality of what their child can understand based on the concepts of healthy child development.

Making Good Parenting Choices Begins with Your Parenting Style

You want the best for your kids. They deserve your best parenting. They need a parenting style that supports who they are so they can grow up and be ready to do the things that make them happy.

A united parenting approach can help you support your child and make parenting decisions together when parenting issues come up.

We all want the best for our kids. We want them to grow up into happy, successful adults. The way you parent your child molds them. It is important to parent with what you want for your child in mind.

How you parent helps your child develop their:

  • effective communication skills and style
  • concept of a healthy relationship
  • temperament
  • goals
  • values
  • beliefs
  • motivation
  • thought patterns
  • reasoning skills
  • expectations
  • sense of self
  • emotional regulation

When you individualize your parenting for each child, keeping their needs in mind, they have the advantage of feeling safe and understood.

Research shows that the quality of a child's parental relationship greatly impacts their brain development. Neuropathways are created by experiences. Repeating experiences strengthens neuropathways. The more positive experiences a child has, the more positive neuropathways they will create. You have the power to actually shape the structure of your child's brain.

Building a secure and healthy relationship with your child can reduce their stress level, boost their social and emotional development, and provide stability to learn and grow.

As a parent who wants the best for your child, your job is to provide that stability in a warm and loving way so your child feels safe to explore and learn from their mistakes. It takes time and practice to parent so your children learn to be accepting of themselves as they grow into responsible adults.

As you figure out how to have this kind of supportive relationship with your child, you can model self-acceptance, patience, and thoughtfulness while you create rules, boundaries, and expectations that have space for exceptions. It takes time and the willingness to be wrong and change your mind when things don't work.

Personalized parenting support with a parenting counseling therapist can help you address the needs of your family on an individual level so you can develop a unique relationship with each of your children. Counseling for parental challenges can support you in finding your child's needs based on their behaviors.

When you support each individual child's needs, the household environment changes. A healthy, supportive environment leaves space for leading by example. Modeling for your kids can help them naturally grow and learn what they need to develop into a healthy adult.

Parent counseling with customized parenting sessions can help you see your child and their needs differently, so you can find unique parenting solutions to support your child as they grow. Counseling can help you see where changes can enhance your child's family experiences to learn about healthy relationships. Parenting as a team is key to creating an environment where you child feels comfortable to explore and learn.

Getting on the Same Page: Parenting Goals

When your goals and therapy styles are aligned with your partner's, your parenting becomes stronger. Your child won't get mixed messages that are confusing and difficult to follow. This creates a safe and stable environment for your child to thrive.

Getting on the same page can be challenging. You both had different parents. You both grew up in different environments. Each of you has different childhood experiences to pull from. There are things you want to duplicate and other things you want to avoid. It takes time to sift through all these things and build your own custom parenting style together to meet your child's needs.

Each child needs a different kind of guidance. What was right for you may not be right for your child. Share what you notice about your child with your partner and be willing to discuss different interpretations of needs and impacts. Parents need to be flexible to support needs in different stages of development.

You and your child are ever-changing. Your parenting will change to match as you all grow and learn together.

How to make parenting decisions together

Once you are both on the same page, decisions become easier. You already agree on your approach to parenting. That's a strong foundation.

When you are both using a similar mindset, decision making doesn't create fear of being judged by your partner. It feels safe to brainstorm as things come to mind. Everything is valid to consider.

You might do research separately and come back together to share what you learned. There is a give and take of ideas to come to a decision. One of you might have strong feelings about something while the other isn't as invested. That partner can defer, and the tables will turn another time. Everything tends to even out in the end if there is genuine caring and respect.

One thing you can discuss and decide ahead of time is what kinds of decisions require collaboration and what kinds of decisions each parent can make alone. When your mindsets are aligned, you become a cohesive and trusting team. Little changes that are outside the regular daily routine can be added, or regular routines altered for different situations, without consulting your partner. This is similar to not asking for your partner's approval to purchase something at the grocery store. Eventually, it all just flows naturally.

Addressing Parenting Issues

Identifying Common Parenting Challenges

Parental responsibilities can get overwhelming at times. Life throws us curve-balls, and we have to respond. Some common issues that come up can be discussed ahead of time so you're somewhat prepared. Having a rough outline you agree on can reduce stress when something doesn't go as expected. Understanding how to handle situations in a way that matches your child's needs is a step toward effective parenting.

You can discuss things your child may experience before they happen and have a loose plan that either or both of you can implement:

  • Difficulty managing transition periods
  • Overwhelm meltdowns
  • Accommodating diverse needs
  • Self-regulation difficulties

I can provide you with personalized parenting support you as you make plans for these and other situations where you child needs your support. We can look at what your child has experienced in the past and come up with some solutions to experiment with.

Seeing your child and their experiences from several different perspectives is a proactive step toward raising them based on their needs and becoming the best parent you can be in each moment.

Non-Judgmental Listening and Support: Different Parenting for Child Development

Creating a safe and supportive environment where your child feels heard and understood is crucial. Non-judgmental listening involves truly hearing what your child is saying without interruption, blame, or criticism.

When you allow space for your child to express emotions and explain their thought process, you empower them. You teach them that their viewpoint is valid, and they are important enough to be heard. Respectful and open communication strengthens your relationship.

By practicing empathy and validating their feelings, you can help your child feel secure and build trust. This is essential, especially when raising neurodiverse children who often have a different take on situations. Working with a neurodiversity-affirming therapist can help you become a more understanding and supportive parent.

Conflict Resolution for Family Mental Health and Parenting Counseling

Conflicts are an inevitable part of family life. Effective conflict resolution can make your life easier. Seeing conflicts as teaching moments and opportunities for growth can change your household dynamics.

Instead of engaging in conflict like going to battle and winning, let yourself see the situation more broadly. You have a valuable moment to teach your children so many things. These things immediately come to mind:

It's okay to make mistakes. We learn from them.

You can choose to do something different next time.

Parents make mistakes, too.

You are important to us.

Safety comes first.

All people matter.

We can find a solution together.

We will always be there for you.

There are many creative ways to make amends.

We can find where communication broke down.

Communication skills and compromise go hand in hand.

There are as many creative ways to practice conflict resolution as there are stars in the sky. It is possible to match your solutions to your family's needs when you keep them at the center of your conversation and collaborate. Even two-year-olds can have helpful input.

Personalized parenting support from a parenting counselor can help you create an environment where everyone in your family feels heard and valued.

Building Stronger Parent-Child Relationships

Being Present and Available for Your Child

Your children need one-on-one undivided attention. When your child knows you will always be available when they need you, it creates a foundation of security for them to explore their independence and try new things.

When you are fully present with them and give them your time, no matter how small or insignificant the activity or action may seem, your child learns they have value. Being present and available and actively engaging with them in meaningful ways helps them develop self-worth.

You're busy. Your child knows this. When you take the time to put aside tasks such as cleaning, hobbies, scrolling on your phone, or work, to focus on your child's needs and interests, they feel safe and important.

Helping your child build confidence, strength, creativity, and self-worth creates a strong foundation for stability and success in life. This doesn't mean they never have to wait. Needs can be met with balance.

When you work with a therapist for individual counseling who understands the importance of the little things that empower children to grow up into happy, successful adults, you can receive personalized parenting support to strengthen your own foundation so you can show your children what it's like to live life to its fullest.

Individual counseling can help you develop a mindset and strategies to be more present, see situations differently, and allow yourself to experience joy. Enjoying life together as a family is a huge part of living a fulfilling life.

Prioritizing time together and showing genuine interest can strengthen your individual and family bonds and create lasting memories. You can improve your parenting skills one little change at a time. I can help you find ways to raise your children that fit with who you are and who your child is to make life go more smoothly for your whole family.

Exploring New Possibilities Together as Your Child Grows Up

Many parents contact me wanting to strengthen their relationship with their child. This usually happens when their child is a teen or preteen. At this age, you realize that time is passing quickly, and you don't have much time left before they leave the nest. Family therapy can help you figure out how you want to spend the time you have living under the same roof.

Exploring new possibilities together can be a great way to strengthen the relationship with your child. Bonding looks different with every child. The process could involve trying new things together. You could try new activities that are in the scope of their interests.

Here are some examples of things my clients have tried with their kids:

  • Problem-solving together.
  • Cooking foods from other cultures together, starting with finding a recipe, then shopping, creating a table decor theme, and telling the rest of the family about the culture and the importance of the food.
  • Going hiking with the purpose of looking for or doing something specific.
  • Taking a trip to a museum and creating a photo journal together.
  • Fixing something at home together and giving the child the lead.
  • Do a creative project together from your child's design.
  • Ask your child to teach you something.

The key is to spend time and attention and step outside of your comfort zone to create shared experiences that you can enjoy together. Problem solving, learning, and connection will present themselves naturally as long as you keep an eye out for them.

Family counseling can help your child open up so you can identify activities that align with their interests. The possibilities are endless. There are so many ways to create a sense of adventure and discovery.

It's a different outlook and a creative way to parent. Counseling can help you find your own unique ways to create lasting memories and bonds with your child.

Parenting the Child You Have to Build Strong Sense of  Self-Worth

Before a baby is born, there's lots of time to think about what your child will be like. Everyone has dreams about their relationship with their child. We also create expectations.

Our dreams change and grow with our children. We visualize what life will be like when they are grown. Our mind comes up with options for their career, their partner, and their lifestyle. We have everything all mapped out before they even come into the world. We want the best for them. It's normal, but it can lead to disappointment.

Babies are born with their own personalities and needs. There was no checklist for us to check off the qualities we wanted. They come as they are.

Parenting the child you have, rather than the child you imagined, can be quite the learning curve. You want a healthy parent-child relationship, and nobody told you how to do that. Wouldn't it be nice if every baby came with an individualized manual? Maybe not.

A big part of bonding is learning your child's needs and how they communicate them. This involves accepting your child for who they are. Acceptance and love go together. They are important elements of self-worth.

Your child comes with all their unique strengths and challenges. It's a challenge and an adventure to learn all about your child. When you see parenthood as an opportunity to learn and grow into the best parent version of yourself, it takes pressure off. It's a process. You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be present.

Parent counseling can help you let go of unrealistic expectations. (You've done that before with visions of what your life would be like when you grew up.) You can learn about your child's personal stages of development and embrace their individuality. Your child is unique, and you are uniquely prepared to be their parent.

When you get used to focusing on your strengths and theirs, providing unconditional love and support comes more naturally. You can help your child thrive and develop a strong sense of independence and self-worth. I can support you as you take a non-judgmental approach and celebrate your child's unique journey.

FAQ

What are the goals of parenting counseling?

The primary goal of counseling for parents is to meet the needs of parents and their children. What this includes will be different for every family unit. Creative parenting solutions that take individual needs into account are often the most successful.

FAQ

How can counseling provide support for single parents?

Families come in all shapes and sizes. One parent and one child is just as valid as a family as two to four parents with 9 children. Counseling can provide invaluable support for single parents. A trusted therapist can be someone you bounce ideas off and discuss difficulties with. Your therapist will create a safe place to explore unique challenges, emotions, and relationships.

Single parents often feel overwhelmed by all their responsibilities. Counseling can support you as you find ways to cope and develop ways to be the parent you want to be for your child. When single parents can connect with someone who understands their situation, they feel less alone and more in control of their lives.

FAQ

How do I find the best online parenting counseling?

Everyone has different criteria for finding a therapist. Take the time to make a list with your partner so you know what is most important to you. Once you know what you are looking for in a therapist, you can begin your search.

There are many therapist directories online. Most of them are owned by large companies. These directories have algorithms that show preference for venture-capitalist providers that pay therapists low wages requiring more work hours a week for therapists to meet their financial needs. This is one of the main reasons for the therapist shortage.

Try to find supportive parenting therapy by doing your own search using terms that are on your list of criteria. You can widen your search by searching for a counselor who offers online mental health services.

Here are some examples of search terms you might want to try:

  • parenting counseling for neurodivergent parents
  • adult ADHD therapist for parent therapy
  • counselor for positive parenting solutions
  • personalized parenting support counseling autism
  • therapy for partnership in parenting
  • tailored parenting support for blended families
  • supportive parenting therapy for single parents
  • online parenting counseling therapist for special needs children
  • counseling for parents of toddler
  • self-improvement for parent
  • therapy to improve parenting skills
  • therapy for specific parenting guidance on sibling issues
  • virtual counseling for parents from different cultures
  • parenting counselor for individual child's needs
  • parenting counseling therapist for school problem

I hope these examples give you a good idea of where to start. There are so many different searches you can do using different terms for the same issues. The more you try, the better your chances are of finding a therapist who meets your needs.

When you search, be sure to include your state in your search terms. Mental health professionals are licensed by state. We are not allowed to practice in states where we don’t hold a license.

Some therapists are licensed in multiple states. I am licensed in California, Nevada, and Florida.
